MADURAI: More than 1,000 people held a sit-in protest in Sekkipatti village against the Madurai district administration inviting tenders for granite quarries. They demanded the state government withdraw the tender and protect the agriculture in the region.

Heavy police picketing has been deployed in the village. In a statement dated October 10, the Madurai district administration announced calling for tenders for quarrying multi-colour granite stones in Sekkipatti, Ayyapatti and Thiruchunai villages in Melur block for a period of 20 years. The tenders are to be opened on October 31.

The Sekkipatti villagers alleged that there is a Murugan temple on the hillock proposed for the granite quarry. There are primary health care centre and girls’ higher secondary school near the spot as well.

After the district administration announced the tender process, residents of the three villages passed resolutions against the quarrying and sent them to the state government earlier. The villagers also approached the Madurai collector M S Sangeetha last week during the weekly grievance redressal day meeting and submitted petitions to withdraw the tender.

During the recent farmers’ grievance redressal meeting, farmers from the Melur region said that granite quarrying will destroy agriculture. The collector told the farmers then that their grievances had been communicated to the government and the state would decide on the quarries. So, the villagers have come together and launched an indefinite sit-in strike till the government responds in their favour. They warned that the protest will not be withdrawn till the government cancels the tender.
