TRICHY: Residents of Sri Mahalakshmi Nagar in Alathur in Trichy city submitted a petition to the corporation on Monday seeking additional streetlights in their neighbourhood. The petitioners claimed that inadequate lights discourage women and senior citizens from stepping out during odd hours.

Sri Mahalakshmi Nagar Residents’ Welfare Association said that four major residential settlements falling under ward 42 have 24 streetlight poles.

However, the poles were highly inadequate for the residents to engage in morning walks and for pedestrians to reach main roads late at night. A minimum of 12 more streetlights are needed, they said.

Apart from anti-social elements, residents said reptiles and insects are not visible due to the poor illumination. The localities falling under the peripheral ward were formerly with the rural local bodies and were added to Trichy corporation in 2011.

Residents said they have petitioned the urban local body seven times in the past 11 years, but no solution has been found.

Receiving the petition, mayor Mu Anbalagan told the residents that an inspection will be carried out to assess the need for basic amenities.
