Now, wannabe property agents must pass RERA test, get certificate in Telangana, ET RealEstate

HYDERABAD: Real estate agents in Telangana will soon have to appear for an exam and get a certificate in order to do their job. Even those already in the business will need to take this test to renew their licence.

N Satyanarayana, chairman of Telangana RERA said the body was working on finalising the module and has roped in multiple stakeholders for the job. The objective: To add credibility to realtors who are often the ‘face’ of a property deal.

At present, such a rule exists only in Maharashtra.

“I have studied the Maharashtra model and decided to put a similar system in place here,” said the chairman of TS-RERA adding, “The idea is to conduct a training programme for realtors and have an online test at the end of it. Those who pass the test, will be given a certificate.”

The official said he was in discussion with the Hyderabad Realtors Association (HRA) and the Advocates Association for Social Responsibility and Awareness (AASRAA) to work out the modalities of this proposal and assist RERA in rolling it out. “I also plan to bring on board some premier institutions to offer training and conduct the test,” Satyanarayana said. Along with English, he wants it to be available in Telugu.

HRA members feel it is a step in the right direction to institutionalise the realty sector. “It will promote transparency and trust in the real estate sector. We are committed to collaborating with RERA to ensure the successful implementation of this system,” said Sarith Jonnala, president of HRA.

As part of the Maha RERA model followed in the neighbouring state, property agents have to undergo a day-long certification course and subsequently clear an exam to start practising as a realtor. The licence issued thereafter is valid for a period of five years.

“The system has been working successfully in Maharashtra and we wish to see all other states also initiate the process as it will not only bring credibility to the profession but also ensure that they are well-equipped to serve as the trusted ‘face’ of property deals,” said Ravi Varma, chairman, National Association of Realtors, India.
