PUNE: Clearing misconceptions created by realtors and property owners that police permission was essential to rent out properties, thereby deterring possessors from sharing information about tenants, the Pune police crime branch on Saturday said no such directive was issued.

“The directives issued mandate title holders to share information about their tenants with the police to verify their credentials else they would be liable to be prosecuted under Section 188 of the Indian Penal Code,” said the assistant commissioner of police (ACP) (crime-1) Sunil Tambe while delivering a lecture at a massive gathering of over 1,000 people of different communities at a function organized by the police in-collaboration with Bandu Bhau Bhaichara Foundation, an NGO at the New Grace English School at Meethanagar in Kondhwa.

Tambe appealed to proprietors to click a link on the Pune police website to upload information about tenants while seeking assistance from the housing society’s chairman and secretary to maintain individual records on properties.

Citing instances relating to bomb blasts in Pune and Mumbai, Tambe said, “In all such cases, the link of terror suspects seeking shelter in the state has surfaced where property owners have not shared tenant details,” he said.
