BELAGAVI: The Belagavi Urban Development Authority (Buda) has called tenders from consultant firms to implement Kanabargi residential project (scheme no.16). If everything goes according to plan, applications will be called from public for the sites in February-2024.

Buda hasn’t developed any new layout in the past 15 years, which has led to a tremendous surge in the land cost in the city. Ramtirth Nagar layout was the last residential project of Buda. Due to its underperformance, there has been a huge pressure on Buda to implement the Kanabargi project.

Kanabargi project was supposed to be developed in 159 acres and 23 guntas area. As the farmers in around 30 acres are fighting a legal battle, the project is likely to be implemented in the remaining land. This is also touted as the reason for Buda delaying development of a new layout in the city.

Earlier, the government had proposed sharing of land on 60:40 ratio with the farmers. After the farmers refused to accept it, a 50:50 ratio proposal was floated. A majority of farmers accepted the proposal, except the farmers owning 30 acres.

These farmers are still fighting to save their land, as many of them already have buildings on that land. According to agreement, Buda is supposed to give 50% developed sites to the farmers who have given their lands.

Last week, during his visit to Belagavi, the urban development minister Byrathi Suresh stated that, the work on Kanabargi layout project would start within two months. Accordingly, the tenders have been floated by the Buda. Speaking to the TOI, Shakeel Ahmed said: “We have already floated tenders, and if all goes well, the work of marking of sites will begin within two months.”

Residential complex planned in 20 acres

The BUDA also has planned a residential building complex at Kanabargi itself to cater to the needs of the poor and middle class of owning a house. The residential complex will come-up on a 20-acres area. “The project will commence once the work of Kanabargi layout project is initiated,” BUDA commissioner Shakeel Ahmed said.
