CHANDIGARH: A joint committee comprising officials from the Haryana State Pollution Control Board (HSPCB), Charkhi Dadri administration and Central Pollution Control Board has recovered Rs 4.01 crore as environmental compensation from 44 stone crushers of Charkhi Dadri, says the status report submitted to the National Green Tribunal (NGT).

The committee also informed the tribunal that 70 criminal cases have been lodged and 47 properties attached for non-compliance with norms. The status report has been prepared by the joint inspection team of the Haryana government constituted on the directions of the NGT in a case against Dadri’s stone crushers filed by a local, V K Jangra.

According to information, the case was filed in 2017 and the apex green bench had been monitoring and taking reviews of the work done by the HSPCB as well as the state government in controlling the pollution caused by stone crushers in Charkhi Dadri.

At the time of filing of case, there were 343 stone crushers operating in Charkhi Dadri, causing air and water pollution in the area. As a result, besides breathing issues, road infrastructure too had been hit hard. When the government failed to act, Jangra moved NGT with his plea for action.

According to the latest data collated by the green tribunal, there were only 239 units which were found to be operational after having the necessary permissions from the authorities concerned as well as the state pollution board.

The remaining units were lying defunct or the machinery therein was found to be dismantled for closures, the report shows.

It also mentions that over 9 lakh trees have been planted over the period of past three years. This comes along with putting four systems in place which control the dust, the report adds.
