PATNA: With Patna Smart City Limited (PSCL) planning to install 3,300 closed-circuit television (CCTV) cameras across the city — and with thousands of them already in place — residents have called for setting up of the surveillance systems in residential areas and link roads as well to curb petty crimes like pickpocketing and snatching.

“It is important to have the necessary surveillance systems as it deters criminals from committing crimes. But most residential areas do not have the facility as the primary focus of the administration is to secure the main roads and prime localities first. The miscreants find it safe to snatch, steal or rob the people of their belonging in these areas as there is no chance to get identified,” said Mukta Nandan, a resident of Ashiana Nagar.

Public relations officer of PSCL, Priya, said around 2,200 out of 3,300 CCTV cameras have been installed in the city under the project.

“There is a delay in installing the remaining ones due to the ongoing construction works under various projects like Namami Gange and Patna metro. The cameras are connected to the optical fibre cable network, the work of which is under process at various locations. We are trying to cover the service lanes as well by installing the cameras at junctions of main and link roads,” she said.

Ravi Ranjan, a resident of Patel Nagar, suggested even common people should make efforts to put up the CCTV cameras at markets and residential societies. “Shop owners or residential colonies can collect funds to put up cameras in their localities. It would help both the society and the administration,” he added.
