MANGALURU: The stakeholders of the Mangalore Hotel Association (MHA) have asked the district administration to curb the instances of mushrooming of illegal homestays and the subletting of rooms in rented houses.

The issue was discussed during the meeting with tourism stakeholders in Dakshina Kannada, chaired by DK DC Mullai Muhilan, held on Thursday.

The stakeholders complained to the DC that some people rent out their vacant rooms in apartments or independent houses to guests. This has no monitoring, and they also alleged that these places encourage illegal activities. Nishank Suvarna, general secretary of MHA, complained that a lot of independent houses and apartments have been rented by those students who study here.

“Whenever one of the rooms is empty, they sublease or rent it out to locals and also people coming from other places. They are totally unaware of the identity of the guests, who occupy it. Most importantly, these are utilised for illegal activities, and the house owner is unaware of it,” alleged Suvarna, demanding action from the district administration.

He said this affects the business of hotels that provide accommodation.
