AMARAVATI: The Guntur Municipal Corporation (GMC) has decided to replace the street lights with high voltage LED tubes.

Commissioner Chekuri Keerthi has directed the engineering department to immediately replace all the lights on the main roads and junctions.

The city is moving back to light from the darkness thanks to the commissioner’s decision to replace the existing low-wattage bulbs with high wattage bulbs.

Commissioner herself noticed that the existing tube lights were not providing sufficient lighting during the nights during her visits in the city and decided to improve the visibility with high-voltage lights. Keerthi asked the officials to replace the existing 135watts lights with 180 watts luminaries on the medians on all the main routes in the city.

“We have noticed that the existing lighting system is not only insufficient to provide light on the streets but also causing serious discomfort to the commuters during the night travel. We will make all the important routes glittering with high wattage lights,” said Keerthi.

In the first phase, the lighting system from NTR statue to Manipuram flyover down will be improved with new lighting system. About 26 street lights will be replaced on this route to bring extra lighting. This route has been identified as important as hundreds of people were visiting RTC bus station even during the night times. “New lighting system will also help improve the safety on the important routes,” said commissioner.
