GUWAHATI: The GMC set up a tax collection kiosk at City Centre Mall on Friday in an attempt to make the process of property tax filing easy for the citizens.

GMC mayor Mrigen Sarania, while inaugurating the kiosk, said the corporation decided to set up the facility at the mall as it has become a hotspot for residents in recent times.

Sarania said, “Many citizens, especially the elderly find it difficult to use online methods to pay taxes. This kiosk will help them to pay the taxes easily. One person will be appointed by the corporation at the kiosk to help the taxpayers.”

Sarania added that the corporation with the help of HDFC Bank will soon set up such kiosks at several other places, including in the branches of different banks in the city. “HDFC Bank has also provided us 50 swiping machines, which will help us in collecting the taxes directly from the houses.”

Mayor Sarania said this year tax collection has shown a positive trend compared to last year. “Last year from January to August, tax collection was around Rs 37 crore, which stands at Rs 54 crore this year during the same time period.”
