KOLHAPUR: The Kolhapur Municipal Corporation (KMC) is planning to form 60 teams of two employees each to carry out property survey for revision of taxes — a task undertaken by the civic administration to increase its revenue.

The civic employees from the property tax department began the survey on June 7 and till July 14 only 1,266 properties have been surveyed. The teams will be assessing 1.35 lakh properties.

The task not only involves surveying the properties, but also revising the tax amount, issuing of notices and getting replies from the owners.

KMC’s property tax superintendent Sudhakar Challawad, while speaking to TOI, said, “The higher officials have given approval to rope in 120 employees from other departments to accomplish the tax revision work. The employees will be grouped into a group of two and will be asked to scrutinise the properties. They will be handed a list of properties and accordingly the target will set. We expect the task to be completed in a year.”

Out of the 1,266 properties surveyed so far, 118 have additional constrictions done, 154 are newly-constructed but are yet to be signed up for property tax. Also, 136 are rented properties for which the tax rate is different.

In 2019, the task to survey the properties was given to a private agency. But there were allegations against the surveyors of the private firm that they took bribes from property owners to hide the actual size of the property.

“To avoid such things again, we will have a senior official to independently carry out scrutiny of the properties. They will be handed over random list of properties and it will help us know whether the survey is being carried out in an unbiased manner and without any influence of the property owner,” Challawad said.
