AHMEDABAD: The Gujarat high court on Friday said that the state government should not take too much time to fill vacant posts in the Gujarat Real Estate Regulatory Authority Appellate Tribunal.

The court’s remarks to the government, to not cause delays in the appointments, came after Justice (retd) R M Chhaya was appointed chairperson of the RERA appellate tribunal last week.

The HC disposed of the PIL demanding filling of the vacancies of chairperson and technical member that had been vacant since June 2021 and September 2021, respectively.

The bench headed by the chief justice said the vacancies were filled only in September, and that too after the high court issued directions.

“We are constrained to observe that there is a considerable delay by the state government in filling the posts for a period of more than two years, and it is necessary to observe that no such situation should arise in the future,” the court said.

Earlier, the high court had taken the state government to task for not expediting the appointment process and asked whether the government wanted to keep the people of Gujarat “remedy-less”.
