NAVI MUMBAI: Foundation collapse and development of cracks at three under-construction houses being built by Mhada (Maharashtra Housing and Area Development Authority) have raised safety concerns among the locals. The houses are being built for the July 2021 landslide-hit families of Taliye village, Mahad.

The landslide that took place on July 22, 2021, had killed 87 people, and had left two injured. However, while 41 survivors had managed to escape. Since then, the victims have been staying in container homes but now it’s adding to their woes. Repeated deadlines to handover the houses have been missing since the last seven months.

There are 271 beneficiaries, and each has been allocated over 3,000 square feet land by the state government. Each of them will get a two BHK house measuring about 630 square feet. The Mhada-Konkan division is assigned to construct the 271 houses at a collective cost of Rs 66 crore. Around 40 houses have been completed.

Other infrastructure work worth Rs 8 crore which include road, gutter line, power supply, school, anganwadi, community hall, bazaar peth, crematorium, public toilet, sewage treatment plant, gram panchayat office, ST bus stand and gymnasium works has been approved and is underway.

Taliye resident and one of the beneficiaries Pradip Kondhalkar alleged. “A week ago, with the advent of monsoon, the foundation with boulder filling of one house collapsed. There are cracks that developed on two other houses which have broken the tiles and rock piece filled base of the house. These expose Mhada’s poor quality work raising serious concern.”

The Mhada have come out with a media release stating that construction work of the houses started in November 2022. These houses will be handed over only after obtaining the structural stability report from IIT-Mumbai.

The Mhada-Konkan division deputy engineer Mayur Kapare said, “Boulder with earth filling was done to level a plot to construct a house on it but it collapsed. The other crack issues will also be rectified. The works remain incomplete.”
