Civic Body Hikes Regularization Fine For Illegal Buildings, Real Estate News, ET RealEstate
KOLKATA: The KMC has hiked the amount of the fine that developers and owners pay for violation of the civic body’s buildings rules. The aim, said civic officials, was to discourage unauthorized constructions.
“We had proposed to levy a regularization fine higher than the registration price of a property. This has been approved and we have started imposing the increased fine on errant builders or owners found guilty of unauthorized constructions,” said a KMC buildings department official.
An official pointed out that the hefty fine, coupled with the recent demolition of unauthorized buildings, seemed to act as a deterrent against violating building rules to some extent.
“First of all, we won’t allow regularization of buildings that have been constructed by grossly violating the rules. But we might allow it in certain cases, subject to clearance by a hearing officer,” said a KMC buildings department official.
But those looking to carve out space out of a sanctioned plan or add facilities to an old structure, like a toilet, would be spared and given the nod after the payment of a nominal amount, said a KMC official.
