KOLKATA: Following the Calcutta High Court directives to clear all pending hearings regarding illegal land grab and unauthorised building construction within the Bidhannagar Municipal Corporation (BMC) jurisdiction area, the civic authorities have sent self-evacuation and demolition notices to the developers of 322 unauthorised buildings, mostly in the Rajarhat-Gopalpur area.

Officials said there were 333 such buildings in question and the civic body was conducting internal hearings with the developers on a daily basis.

“The investigation process has been completed and the report on non-compliance has also been placed. Out of the 333 buildings, we have found that about 11 of them have valid sanction plans and completion certifications. Self-evacuation and demolition notices have been sent to the developers of the rest,” said a civic official.

As a policy decision, the civic body will first initiate the process to demolish the under-construction buildings if the developers do not pay heed to the self-demolition notices.

“BMC does not have an executive magistrate. We need to write to the district magistrate and get official permission before any demolition drive could be taken up. Also, people living in several of the buildings need to be evacuated,” said a civic official.

The civic authorities have sent requests to about 25 nationalised and private banks, urging them not to sanction home loans without proper verification. They have also urged WBSEDCL not to provide power connection to those without valid papers.
