Bhubaneswar civic body plans land bank to speed up infrastructure projects, ET RealEstate

BHUBANESWAR: The Bhubaneswar Municipal Corporation (BMC) is planning to create its own land pool to help expedite infrastructure development in the city.

The initiative, a first of its kind, will help the BMC fast-track activities in several fronts – sanitation, beautification, place-making, creation of parking lots and public toilets. Even for carrying out small infra work, the BMC has to seek land from the general administration (GA) department.

“The handing over of land by the GA to BMC on project-to-project basis faces procedural delay. Once the land comes under direct control of the BMC, any project can be implemented in quick time,” a BMC official said.

“We have had initial discussion with the GA and Khurda district administration. In the first phase, according to our estimate, we require about 50 acres for the land bank that can be beneficial for expediting projects which have been already conceived and the projects that will be taken up in future,” BMC commissioner Vijay Kulange said.

The civic body has plans to set up mini-sports complex, community halls and ward offices for which it requires land apart from other need-based projects.

“The GA has a land allotment committee, where applications seeking land from different departments, including BMC, are assessed. The BMC, which has raised its demands for big projects like ward offices, hopes that the land allotment committee will allot plots in its favour in the forthcoming meeting,” BMC deputy commissioner Rajkishor Jena said.
