Action Against Realtors Helps Pmc Save 5l Litre Water Daily, Real Estate News, ET RealEstate
PUNE: The civic body is saving around 5 lakh litres of potable water daily, following action against realtors for failing to use the mandated treated sewage water for construction activities.
According to Pune Municipal Corporation (PMC) officials, as many as 200 construction sites were not using water from sewage treatment plants (STPs). “The civic body has started taking action, such as stopping the construction work, against developers for not following the directives. There has been an uptick in the usage of treated water after we started taking action,” said Kunal Khemnar, the additional municipal commissioner of Pune.
According to PMC data, around 326 construction projects are underway across the civic limits, of which only 128 projects were using STP water during the drive. After the start of the action, the number has gone up by 70-80 sites.
PMC is also contemplating the use of STP water fo golf courses and other sporting facilities.
“The state government has given us instructions to save water. We have introduced once-a-week water cuts,” Aniruddha Pawaskar, the head of PMC’s water supply department, told TOI.
“A dedicated cellphone app has been developed for the transportation and management of tankers carrying treated water. Developers and other commercial establishments, who want to use STP water, should use the app, PMC STP Tanker System,” a civic official said.
A total of 765 developers have registered in this app till date, he added.
“Nearly 240 water tankers are used for construction activities daily. Till mid-June, only 70 were carrying STP water. Now, around 147 tankers are involved in the transportation of treated water,” another official said.
Many tanker operators, however, are unwilling to transport STP water due to fear of contamination.
