CHANDIGARH: Around 700 commercial property tax defaulters owe the municipal corporation (MC) Rs 97 crore, a number calculated after the end of the two-month rebate period on May 31.

Panjab University (PU) tops the list with Rs 23 crore. Premier medical institute PGI comes next with Rs 12.57 crore. Chandigarh Golf Club has not paid Rs 10 crore, Punjab Engineering College (PEC) Rs 2.45 crore and the Chandigarh railway station Rs 2.35 crore.

All these establishments and properties have not responded even to sealing notices. In fact, the tax issue of PU had gone up to the level of Punjab governor and UT administrator, but the university has showed no inclination to pay up while citing multiple reasons.

A majority of the defaulters have arrears accumulating for the last few years. Some fresh properties too have been added to the list.

Sources said the civic body will now start sending notices to the defaulters to recover the amount. “The list has been prepared after going through data and carrying out calculations. The process to send notices to all these defaulters will start in the next few days. They will now have to pay penalty and interest on the tax,” sources said.

The process of preparation of a list of defaulters in the residential category is going on.
