Will 354 rickety buildings in Hyderabad survive this monsoon?, ET RealEstate

HYDERABAD: Short spells of heavy rain in run-up to monsoon triggered twin incidents of wall collapse and left a building perilously tilted, setting off alarm bells on the fate of several dilapidated buildings dotting the city that could crumble and inflict collateral damage.

GHMC had identified 354 unstable buildings, during its monsoon preparedness exercise and slapped notices on their owners earlier this month.

The civic body, however, claimed the number of such buildings had dipped to 42%, compared to last year. The caution notices issued an ultimatum to property owners to either vacate or repair the buildings for structural stability. “We will take up demolition work if repair work doesn’t happen on time or the structural stability is weak,” a senior town planning official told TOI.

Enforcement vigilance and disaster management (EV&DM) officials recorded two wall collapse incidents and a tilted building at King Koti near the Secretariat. Besides, a parapet wall of a residential building at Lalapet also collapsed during the recent rains.

GHMC deployed separate teams across all 30 circles to reassess old buildings. Officials said around 230 structures have been repaired and remaining 124 buildings are currently being monitored for structural revamp.

Begumpet houses a maximum of 58 dilapidated structures and Goshamahal circle has around 42 such buildings. Officials are reassessing other circles to ascertain more such structures in wake of the Quthbullapur incident in which a three-storied building tilted after being lifted with hydraulic jacks. It was later demolished. Officials are also examining under-construction buildings and have banned cellar excavations till September.
