HYDERABAD: The National Green Tribunal has ordered an inspection by Hyderabad Metropolitan Development Authority (HMDA) and Sangareddy district collector into alleged violations of a villa project by a BRS corporator-owned infra company at a lake in Bollaram village. It also warned of demolition, if the company went ahead with the project.

NGT also ordered an independent investigation by the integrated regional office of ministry of environment and forests by August 4, following a complaint by Human Rights and Consumer Protection Cell Trust, an NGO. A joint inspection team also asked HMDA brass to review permissions granted to Greater Infra Projects Private Ltd in wake of its findings.

NGT south zone, in the order, said: “This is yet another case where the water body, Varrakunta, in survey numbers 82 and 83 of Bollaram in Jinnaram mandal is converted into a construction site by Greater Infra Projects and others.”

NGT further said: “Photographs filed by the applicant from 2010 make it appear the water body was gradually obliterated by choking inlet and outlet channels and damaging sluices and weirs. HDMA is also appeared to have granted permission for construction of the villa.”

The tribunal also said: “From photographs, it appears construction has commenced and if it continues, it will be at their own risk. The tribunal will not hesitate to pass a demolition order if the villa is on the water bo y.”

Thakur Raj Kumar Singh of the NGO contended that HMDA, without mentioning the land survey number, had allowed a housing layout under the gated community category to Greater Infra Projects.

Miyapur BRS corporator Uppalapati Sreekanth is one of the promoters and directors of the infra company. “Google images clearly show the lake has been decimated by promoters with help of public servants,” Thakur alleged.

The irrigation department, after conducting an inspection to look into dumping of debris in Varrakunta, filed a report on May 1. “The joint inspection team recommended issue of notices under the Telangana Irrigation Act against Greater Infra Projects, represented by its director KV Prasada Rao to stop construction activities within limits of full tank level of the water body and its buffer zone,” the report said.

Sreekanth, however, refuted the allegations. “I am in politics, so these allegations are common. The infra company is not constructing any project in the lake. There is no lake in survey No. 82, where we are constructing,” he told TOI.

Prasada Rao also denied the charges. He said: “The lake is located in survey numbers 81, 83 and 84. We have taken up construction in 7.5 acres in survey No. 82, for which we have records from 1950. Not mentioning the survey number in HMDA final permission letter is a technical error. We, too, raised the error with the officials.”

He said the lake protection committee going by Google images has wrongly mentioned the water body in our survey number as a lake. “We will launch a legal fight and file our report in NGT. Survey Nos. 81 and 84 were converted into plots by then industrial infrastructure corporation in 1983,” he claimed.
