MUMBAI: Squads to monitor air pollution have been formed or are in the process of being formed in the 24 municipal wards in the city. Some of the wards are handing out a checklist of measures to construction sites with a deadline.

T ward has issued a stop-work notice to another construction company, Neelam Realtors, for its project Neelam Supremo in Mulund for failure to comply with the guidelines issued to mitigate air pollution. The BMC had previously issued a notice to the Prestige City project, also in Mulund.

Members of the flying squad for air pollution mitigation enforcement of T ward visited the ongoing building construction site of Neelam Supremo near Kelkar College on 90 Feet Road, Mulund (East) and found that eight conditions of the guidelines were violated.

Mulund MLA Mihir Kotecha said these two construction sites had been regularly violating guidelines. “There are other construction sites too, where pollution rules are being violated. The BMC will issue more notices to the pollution contributors,” he said.

The environment department is developing an MIS system, wherein the wards will provide information on the construction sites that their squads have checked and the parameters examined at each of these sites.

The K-West ward has formed as many as six squads to monitor pollution.

Officials of the ward wrote to the senior inspectors of the six police stations in the jurisdiction of the ward to make available one policeman for each of the squads.

Harshad Kale, DMC Zone-V, instructed officials of three wards, M-East, M-West and L, to form squads in accordance with the geographical area as well as the number of under-construction sites.

Kale asked ward officials to include the pest control officer (PCO) and building and factory (B&F) staff members to prepare a list of construction and project sites, including the sites of SRA, MMRDA and Metro. The PCO is expected to have the list of all construction sites including sites not under the jurisdiction of the BMC.

D ward formed three squads, R-North set up three.
