MADURAI: Citing environmental concerns, Sekkipatti villagers on Saturday expressed their opposition to the public auction of granite quarry leases on government poramboke lands announced by Madurai district collector M S Sangeetha.

Earlier, the collector had invited tender applications for a 20-year lease for granite quarries on government poramboke lands in three villages across the district, namely, Sekkipatti, Ayyapatti, and Thiruchunai. The deadline for submitting applications is October 30.

In response to this, the Sekkipatti villagers submitted a petition to the panchayat president, requesting a special gram sabha meeting to address concerns about the auctioning of the granite quarry lease in their village.

They emphasized in their petition that granite quarrying activities could harm local farming and negatively impact the environment, including animal life, due to pollution. Therefore, they demanded a special resolution opposing the lease auction, to be passed at the earliest possible gram sabha meeting.
