Verifications to go online, tenants can give police stations a miss, ET RealEstate

PUNE: Citizens of Pune registering their leave and licence agreements for property registration would very soon not have to visit police stations and stand in queues for verification as the state property registration department has shared requisite data with the police department making the process online.

While this process had commenced before Covid, it was non-functional for the last two years.

On Saturday, property registration department officials confirmed that their data had been integrated with the police department network.

For Pune city’s 32 police stations, the online verification for tenants will commence next month, said deputy commissioner of police, special branch, R Raja.

“While the system of online tenant verification had started before Covid, it was discontinued during the pandemic. However, it will be revived very soon and people making registered agreements need not visit police stations which are expected to see a reduced footfall. The whole process will make it more convenient for tenants and the owners,” he told TOI. Currently, the data is collected offline

Officials said they had shared the tenant registration data with the police’s crime and criminal tracking network system (CCTNS).

“It is up to the police department to use the data shared for verification and it can be done statewide,” said DIG IT Abhishek Deshmukh. The integration has been carried out and will help both departments. In the online tenant verification system, citizens have to only apply online and the data can be quickly checked by the police.

Sachin Shingavi, the president of the Association of Service Providers, told TOI that only registered documents would get online verification and it would encourage tenants to opt for registered agreements.

“The initiative we had started in Pune before the pandemic was doing well. It should be carried out in the entire state,” said Shinghavi. For the state, officials will have to integrate or map the registration data with all police stations and the work is on.

Advocate Shreeprasad Parab, who is an expert director of the Maharashtra State Housing Federation, told TOI it will be mandatory that the leave and licence agreement executed by members of housing societies be registered as per provisions of the Maharashtra Rent Control Act. The registration department forwarding the details of the registrations or integrating with the police will help both the departments.

“This will enhance the state revenue by registration and also provide flat owners police verification sitting in their homes,” he added.
