Tnhb Residents At Avadi Up In Arms Over Lack Of Facilities, Real Estate News, ET RealEstate

CHENNAI: Fed up with a myriad of woes ranging from water supply to poor infrastructure facilities, residents of Tamil Nadu Housing Board (TNHB) in Avadi staged a demonstration in their locality recently.

More than 6,500 people purchased layouts in Avadi during the 90s and constructed houses as the TNHB had promised 21 facilities including bus stand, library, hospital, marriage hall, police station among others.

“In 2008, the drinking water scheme was started in Avadi, but till date wards 40 and 41 does not have the water supply network. There are two overhead tanks, of 10 lakh litres capacity each, but they are not utilised. We have been purchasing drinking water through tractors and lorries,” said A Dharanidharan, a member of Avadi TNHB residents welfare association.

Another issue was the stormwater drain. “The previous government had sanctioned 7.5 crore for the same but it has not been laid properly. In some portions it has not been completed. Due to this water stagnation is common here. We have been requesting the Avadi municipality to solve the issue, but there has been no respite,” he added.

He added that the government should also cover a 5-ft wide canal in Nazarath School Annexe Lake to prevent children from falling into it. “Some years ago, two children died after falling into it. Even I fell a few years ago and lodged a complaint with Avadi municipality. As there was no response, I filed a petition with the Human Rights Commission,” he said. Dharanidharan claims though the commission had ordered the Avadi Corporation in 2022 to rectify the issue and pay a compensation to him, “neither has happened till date”.

Residents also claimed the TNHB was trying to sell layouts meant for facilities such as libraries and hospitals etc.

K Tharpagaraj, Avadi Corporation commissioner, said that he has already begun the process of providing water supply to residents of wards 40 and 41.

“Even for TNHB I had started the supply, but during the SWD laying work on Parithipattu-Poonamalee Road, the pipeline was removed. Now work on relaying it has begun. Supply will be given soon,” he said.
