Skyscrapers On Rise But Fire Dept Can’t Reach Beyond 42m, Real Estate News, ET RealEstate

NAGPUR: Even though its firefighting team can reach a maximum 42 metres in height, the Nagpur Municipal Corporation (NMC) in the last financial year has given clearance to 46 highrise buildings which will stand over 40 metres tall.

A senior official in the NMC’s town planning department said, “Of late, the city is witnessing a vertical growth which is restricted to 100 metres.” However, this poses a serious problem to the NMC’s fire and emergency services department which can provide firefighting assistance for buildings up to 42 metres in height.

Chief fire officer B Chandankhede said that one of the basic requirements of his department is the hydraulic platform needed to deal with incidents in highrise structures.

The city’s fire department has only two turntable ladders and a hydraulic platform with the capacity to deal with fire incidents up to a vertical limit of 42 metres and 32 metres respectively.

“We have also proposed to procure a 70m hydraulic platform. Even municipal commissioner Radhakrishnan B had okayed the proposal in the NMC budget for the financial year 2023-24 by making a provision of ₹15 crore,” he said.

Until 2022-23, the NMC had given nod to around 144 buildings having more than 40m height. However, a few have started construction work while a couple of highrise buildings like Godrej Anandam and Empress City have come up across the city.

Data from NMC revealed that in 2019-20, the city had around 15 buildings across the corporation limits with more than 40 metres in height. Later, the demand for vertical buildings started witnessing a sharp increase.

In 2020-2021, the civic body had given its nod to 24 buildings having more than 40 metres height, 29 in the following year (2021-22) and 46 in the last financial year.

“While giving NOCs we advise the developer to first look towards developing the firefighting system while allowing construction of high-rise buildings,” he said.

Chandankhede added that while issuing no objection certificates to highrise buildings the fire department ensures that the vertical buildings have in-house firefighting equipment.

The fire department also ensures that high-rise buildings already occupied conduct periodic drills.
