CHANDIGARH: The UT administration has planned to develop the site earmarked for a bulk material market in Sector 56-West to shift the marble market situated in Dhanas at a cost of about Rs 22 crore.

The authorities have chalked out the entire plan, according to which basic infrastructure comprising dedicated road network, water, sewer and storms lines, power sub-station, streetlights, and green areas will be developed first.

Approved by the UT administrator, the project’s detailed layout plan consists of 191 plots of one kanal each, which will have a basement and three floors.

“Proper development has to be ensured as this specific area had been lying abandoned. Multiple high-level meetings have also been held in the past on this matter. Since all the works related to providing basic amenities in this area have to be carried out by multiple wings, a composite financial estimate has been prepared to find the bidder,” an official part of the project said.

The plan also includes proper parking lots, public utilities, and a commercial area to provide required facilities and services to the shop owners and customers. Though all 191 plots will be allotted through e-auction, shop owners from existing marble market will be given the first chance to choose a plot based on the highest bid.

The entire development plan of this area has been prepared in collaboration with multiple departments. The urban planning department has issued drawings to the engineering department of the Chandigarh administration. Multiple meetings were held in the past, where all departments concerned — land acquisition department, urban planning department, and engineering department — explained their respective points and briefed the senior officers about the layout plan.

Since, the issue regarding marble market is also pending with the Punjab and Haryana high court, sources in the UT administration said the court was being apprised of all these developments from time to time.

In 2016 and 2018, the UT administration had conducted physical surveys of the existing marble market in Dhanas, and found 162 marble shops and 20 shops of miscellaneous nature. Keeping the numbers in mind, 191 plots have been identified in the newly proposed market, where a few shops will be turned into eateries.
