SECUNDERABAD: Taxpayers residing in Secunderabad cantonment area can now pay property tax online for the year 2023-24 online using unified e-Chhavani portal.

Officials of the SCB said the ministry of defence (MoD) has made the use of e-Chhavani, a citizen-centric project, mandatory for residents in all the cantonment boards in the country.

Earlier, the collectors used to visit door-to-door to collect taxes. Many taxpayers also used to visit SCB office to pay taxes at cash counters.

During the prevalence of this decades-old system, the officials were facing poor collection of revenue and were failing to meet deadline.

Moreover, many taxpayers who went to pay at cash counters were facing inconvenience due to closure of counters on public holidays.

“Now, taxpayers can pay the taxes online. They will get acknowledgment receipt on the spot,” a senior SCB Tax wing official told TOI. Taxpayers have to pay taxes by June 30. This year, the board expects to collect revenue to the tune of Rs 30 crore, said the official.

An interesting feature the e-Chhavani portal is that the tax officials can see the accurate number of property owners who have paid taxes through the portal.

As many as 30,000 property owners in the area are property tax payers, according to SCB .
