BELAGAVI: The residents of Devaraj Urs Colony under Belagavi City Corporation (BCC) staged a protest on one of the roads in their area on Sunday, demanding development. The protest was held under the leadership of Devaraj Urs Colony Welfare Society. The protesters cautioned that if the officials did not visit and listen to their grievances, they will block the Bagalkot-Belagavi state highway and a carry out a fierce struggle.

Speaking on the occasion, the residents said that the colony has been deprived of development for over 40 years. This area comes under Scheme No. 11, the first project undertaken by Belagavi Urban Development Authority (Buda) in 1982. Citizens lamented that the lack of development of the colony was a testament to the poor performance of the city administration and Buda.

Many areas and colonies that were established much later have been developed gradually. Buda handed over the colony to the BCC without having developed it. It is known that money given by Buda to the Corporation for the development of the colony was not utilised and Devaraj Urs Colony was lagging in terms of basic amenities, the protesters alleged.

Devaraj Urs Colony comes under Smart City project. Since Buda took over, no proper sewage or drainage system has been constructed here. During the rainy season, the drainage water seeps into many houses. The area does not even have proper road connectivity. Motorists still resort to using the street road at Basavan Kudachi. The independent road identified by the people from the colony to the city has not been constructed till now. Drinking water is being released in the colony once every 10-12 days.

Every year, the colony citizens pay house tax to the city corporation. Although the residents had appealed to the MLAs of Belagavi North, Lok Sabha members, minister-in-charge, city corporation commissioner and deputy commissioner countless times for infrastructure, no one has paid attention, the protesters alleged.

Basavaraj Modagekar, the ward corporator who rushed to the protest spot and received the memorandum, said that Devaraj Urs Colony has not seen any development for several decades. “There are innumerable problems here and proper grant was not given. I will bring all these to the notice of senior officers to solve the problems,” he assured.
