PUNE: The civic body has started the process of collecting property tax from the Metro railway authority.

Taxes will be levied on 18 stations, two depots, and other properties owned by the Maha Metro Rail Corporation. The civic body is expected to collect around Rs20 crore as taxes per year from the Metro authorities.

According to the Pune Municipal Corporation (PMC) officials, the taxes are being levied as per of the annual rateable value of the property. “We are assessing these properties. Once the process is completed, the bills will be dispatched,” said Ajit Deshmukh, the head of the PMC’s property tax department.

Revenue generated from tax collection has gone beyond Rs 1,300 crore in the last two months. After announcement of reintroduction of 40% discount on self-occupied properties, the PMC had to reprint the tax bills, leading to a delay of 1.5 months.

Around 12 lakh properties under the jurisdiction of the PMC are liable to pay taxes. The civic administration gives a special discount to taxpayers who pay tax before May 31 every year.

The deadline for paying taxes at discounted rates had been extended till August 2. Another two more days were given due to a technical snag.
