SECUNDERABAD: The Secunderabad Cantonment Board’s (SCB) move to popularise eChhawani portal for payment of property tax (residential/commercial) is now paying dividends.

As per records, the total property tax amount comes to ₹38 crore and by June 30, the initial deadline, about ₹10 crore has been received by the SCB.

The deadline has now been extended to July 15 to ease pressure on families already burdened by school fees with the beginning of the new academic year, officials said.

The Secunderabad Cantonment Board is also gearing up to take action against wilful defaulters who together owe about ₹5 crore in property taxes. This year out of the ₹10 crore paid so far, about 70% was through the online mode of payment.

“With the online mode open currently, there is little excuse for people to delay payment of property tax. Earlier, many cited problems in offices, absence of staff, server problems to dilly-dally on paying taxes,” an official said.

The tax has been assessed for over 30,000 properties and officials are working on adding 12,000 more buildings which came to light after a door-to-door survey done under the Svamitva scheme done last year.

Officials said that a penalty of ₹100 would be levied on those who do not pay the property tax by July 15 and subsequently notice will be served on defaulters.
