LUCKNOW: Even as restoration work on the portion of road that caved in on Gwynne Road near Kathak Museum in Golaganj began on Thursday, Lucknow Development Authority announced a ban on basement digging across the city until September due to the heavy rains.

To prevent the collapse of houses, 8,000 sandbags were used to stack in a pit that had been created due to rainwater filling.

Secretary, LDA, Pawan Kumar Gangwar, said stacking of sandbags in the pit to prevent soil erosion and ensure security at the site has been done with the help of 75 labourers.

Sand filling was done first, followed by the stacking of these sacks at sensitive areas prone to soil erosion, he said.

LDA teams also surveyed the area to assess property damage. Meanwhile, LDA vice chairman Indramani Tripathi directed builders to stop digging basement work till September. He said that some houses have been damaged by rainwater due to improper basement construction.

Some builders were also accused of not following approved maps and not maintaining a sufficient distance from adjacent plots.

As a result, the ban has been imposed on basement digging at construction sites until September.
