NASHIK: The Nashik Municipal Corporation (NMC) is facing the challenging task of vacating occupants from 1,000 dilapidated wadas before the monsoon picks up.

NMC officials said they have managed to vacate occupants from a dozen wadas so far. But in majority of the cases, the occupants are reluctant to leave the wadas since they do not have any alternative arrangements to stay.

“Moreover, there are disputes between wada owners and tenants. They are not ready to vacate wadas as they have been staying there for many years,” said officials.

NMC’s town planning department has directed divisional officers of all six divisions to take necessary action against those occupants of the wadas, who are not vacating them.

“We have told the divisional officers to take action at their end like snapping water and power connections of the dilapidated wadas,” said a senior official from the town planning department.

Nitin Ner, the divisional officer of Nashik West said they have already served notices to the owners of all the dilapidated wadas in Nashik west division, asking them to vacate wadas, but it has not yielded results.

“Now, we have started the process to snap water and power connections of the wadas,” said Ner.

“We have written to the Maharashtra State Electricity Distribution Company Ltd (MSEDCL) to snap power connections of dilapidated wadas in the division. Moreover, instructions have been given to the water supply department to snap water connections of the unsafe wadas,” said Ner.

Dnaneshwar Aher, an official from the water supply department in Nashik West division, said they have sought police protection for their proposed drive of snapping water connections.

As per the fresh survey of the NMC, the city houses 1,192 wadas that are in dilapidated conditions.

During rain, these wadas become dangerous as there have been cases in the past where the structures have collapsed injuring the occupants.

During the monsoon last year, over 15 wadas had collapsed partially in the city.
