CHANDIGARH: After government and commercial properties, Municipal Corporation, Chandigarh, is all set to target defaulters of residential properties, as the authority has identified 750 defaulters who have not paid their property tax dues. These properties owe around Rs 8-9 crore to the authority, sources have claimed.

“Since the matter of residential property tax defaulters has been discussed at the higher level with concerned senior officers, the civic body authority has prepared recovery notices of over 750 defaulters. We will start sending notices from next week. After sending notices, specific time will be given to the defaulter residential properties to pay their tax amount, after which they will face action,” sources said.

As per information, these defaulter properties are located in different areas across the city, and thus notices have been prepared sector-wise for the distribution. In some cases, the amount of pending property tax also includes arrears of past years.

“The civic body authority has hired the services of Indian Post Office to distribute the bills. As per agreement, Indian Post Office has been charging Rs 15 per notice for local and Rs 35 per notice for areas outside Chandigarh jurisdiction,” an official said.

During the rebate period of two months, April and May, the authority was giving 20% rebate on residential properties of the city, while 10% rebate was announced on the commercial properties.

After the two months` rebate period, now the defaulters of the property tax will have to pay 25% penalty charges over the entire property tax amount and subsequently they will also have to pay 12% interest on the same to the civic body authority.

MC target to collect Rs 92cr as property tax

As per the records of the MC, till date, the civic body authority has received Rs 49 crore property tax from both commercial and residential properties of the city.

Since income from the property tax is one of the biggest sources of revenue for the MC, the authority is keeping this segment on the priority for past few years, and thus their property tax income is increasing in the past few years consistently. For the next financial year, from April 1st 2023, the civic body authority has kept the target to collect Rs 92 crore as property tax.
