HUBBALLI: Replacement of streetlights with LED lights in the twin cities still remains on paper, despite completion of the tender process in January. HDMC authorities are still waiting for clearance for the project from the government.

HDMC floated a Rs 94 crore tender to install 75,000 streetlights, for which two contractors participated and were technically qualified. The file was forwarded to the government for clearance as the amount of tender was more than Rs 50 crore.

Earlier, seven times, from 2018 to 2022, the Hubballi-Dharwad Smart City Limited floated tender for the installation of 58,000 LED street lights, but no one participated in the tender process, and then the project was handed over to the HDMC, which put all its efforts to execute the project for almost one year.

SM Ganachari, head of the electrical section, said, “We are working on the project to replace streetlights with LED lights, for which tender process has been already completed. Two companies participated in the tender. For clearance the file was sent to the tender scrutiny committee constituted at the state level.” “Once the tender scrutiny committee gives clearance the process of issuing work tender and other processes will begin. This project on PPP basis will help to save the electricity bills, which are in the tune of crores currently,” he added.

Venkatesh Mestri, former mayor of HDMC, said that many times the HDSCL called a tender for the project, but no one participated in the process, and the project was shifted to the HDMC. “HDMC officials also worked on the project for a year, but there was no progress,” he added.

Mohan Asundi, former corporator, said, “It is true LED lights will bring some change, but from the past few months the streetlights are not maintained properly. The officials are neglecting the complaints about defunct streetlights, and they will cite the reason that soon the streetlights will be replaced with LED lights, which remained just on paper because of technical issues and other issues.”
