JAMSHEDPUR: The Jamshedpur East constituency, represented by Saryu Rai, will become the first urban assembly constituency in the state to install 3,063 LED solar street lights at a cost of Rs 2.10 crore.

With the joint contribution of the local MLA and the Jharkhand Renewable Energy Development Agency (JREDA), installation of 1,500 LED solar lights under the second phase of the project began on Saturday.

Earlier, 1,563 street lights were installed in 2021. Out of the total installation cost, Rs 1.38 crore is from the MLA’s Local Area Development (LAD) funds.

As per the agreement reached between the legislator and the JREDA, the latter will bear the subsidy part and the cost of the maintenance of the solar lights for five years. While the MLA will bear the remaining cost of the installation scheme.

“The solar street light panels will illuminate the areas even when power outages hit the city. Further, the scheme would generate awareness about renewable energy among the residents and highlight the usefulness of the solar lights in public,” Rai said.

The MLA said his constituency is the first in the state to implement the solar street lights scheme with the joint collaboration of the local legislator and the JREDA.

“The idea of the solar street lights scheme struck my mind after the local people repeatedly complained to me about the insufficient lighting facility in several parts of the constituency,” Rai said.

The first phase of the project, which widely covered the cable town area in Golmuri, was reeling under darkness for the past two decades due to the closure of the cable company, which owned the responsibility of the utility services in its command area.

Lauding the initiative, the residents said the project would help the residents of the slum areas, in particular. “Though street lamps are there, several of them do not have the lights,” said Baridih of Vidyapati Nagar resident Shailash Yadav.

Tata Steel employee Dharmendra Kumar (52), a resident of Gandhi Road, Bagunnagar in Baridih, said the local MLA needs to install more solar lights in the slum areas that have mushroomed in the eastern part of the city that lacks adequate municipal facilities.

Jamshedpur East, which has a population of 4,22,678, is 100% urban constituency as per the census data of 2011. Falling under the command area of Jamshedpur Notified Area Committee, it houses 86 unauthorised slums.
