RAJKOT: Harvesting rainwater can not only quench thirst, but this elixir of life can also help coffers swell.

The Junagadh Municipal Corporation (JuMC) has cashed in on the heavy rainfall and become the first civic body in India to earn water credits. As part of global efforts to save fast-depleting water sources, the United Nations Framework for Conven tion on Climate Change (UNFCCC) in 2014 began issuing water credits through designated agencies that can help civic bodies, industries, and residential societies en cash credits for stored rainwater.

The JuMC was issued 9 million water credits for saving one crore litres of water in its Hasnapur water reservoir which meets the city’s 30% demand. The corporation had applied for water credits in July of 2023 and a detailed scrutiny of the project was carried out by a UNFCCC-authorized agency United Water Registry (UWR).

Hasnapur dam and reservoir was built in 1964 and it can store up to 340 billion cubic feet of water. R M Tanna, municipal commissioner of Junagadh, said, “We are the first municipal corporation in India to earn water credits for our reservoir. It’s a futuristic concept that will enable us to raise financial resources from the water we conserve and store in our reservoirs.”

The credits are issued by various agencies designated by the UN body and JuMC had hired a voluntary organization Gram Vikas Trust (GVT) as consultants for documentation and videography to provide all evidence of rainwater harvesting. Vihar Pancholi of Universal Water Registry, one of the designated agencies, said, “This is the first project by any civic body in India that earned water credits and they can earn hefty amounts in the future that can be used in other developmental works.”

“We joined this project without taking any charges from the civic body with a sole condition to share half of the credits that JuMC earns.”
