MUMBAI: The number of private charging points for electric vehicles (EVs) in housing societies and bungalows in Mumbai has increased 328% in a year, latest statistics showed. Also, 26% of electric car owners now have charging points at home.

The 2,140 private charging points include around 1,200 chargers in housing societies in Adani Electricity distribution area, 740 personal home chargers in Tata Power supply areas and around 200 charging points in BEST and MSEDCL distribution areas, sources said. Last year, there were around 500 private charging points in the city.

“I prefer charging my vehicle to over 80% before exiting my society gate and on long drives as I would have to pay nearly double to get it charged at a mall or petrol pump,” said an EV owner from Kandivli, who did not wish to be named.

Nitin Dossa from the Western India Automobile Association, who switched from a diesel to electric car last month, said the environment-friendly SUV not only gives him good mileage of 450km for single charge, but is low on running costs and maintenance. “There are several public and private charging stations coming up across the city. I have installed the EV charger at my bungalow on Ridge Road and my experience has been very good. It costs me around Re1/km for charging,” Dossa said.

Urban designer and architect Trupti Amritwar said she usually plugs in her electric car at night so that it is fully charged by morning. “To get a range of 312km, I need to charge my vehicle for 7 to 8 hours overnight,” she added.

Transport expert Vivek Pai, who also owns an electric vehicle, said many new housing societies and even existing ones are putting up charging points. “It gives confidence to the EV owner that he or she can charge as per convenience and is also certain that the vehicle will not need another (electric) charge for a particular distance being travelled,” he said.

Pointing out that a housing society is an important and strategic segment when it comes to promoting e-mobility, a Tata Power official said: “We have already partnered with major builders in Mumbai and are in discussion to expand further.”

When contacted, an official from Adani Electricity said they plan to install a total of 8,500 EV charging stations in the suburbs. “Additionally, we operate as the preferred EV charging partners for BEST buses among other players in Mumbai’s EV ecosystem.” Adani Electricity also boasts of having a rooftop solar panel which is connected to EV charging for a few cars in a housing society in western suburbs.

An official from the BEST power supply wing explained that installations for EV charging in parking lots are done by individual consumers. “BEST provides electric supply at MERC-approved rates through the meter on receipt of application from consumers,” the official added.
