MUMBAI: Social media went into a tizzy after citizens pointed to a cave-in near Magathane Metro station area in Borivli east over the past two days. Probe revealed the cave-in was due to deep excavation carried out by a builder for a private project near Entry Exit 2 of Magathane station. The BMC has issued a stop work notice and an FIR has been registered against the builder.

“We have concluded that there is no risk to the operation of metro services. We are working closely with the BMC and the builder to implement remedial measures and ensure the safety and stability of the stormwater drain chamber, as well as the foundation of the stairs and escalator at Magathane station,” said Dr Sanjay Mukherjee, IAS, Chairman & MD, Mumbai Metro Operation Corporation Limited (MMMOCL).

Following reports, a joint inspection was conducted by the Mumbai Metropolitan Region Development Authority (MMRDA), Maha Mumbai Metro Operation Corporation Limited (MMMOCL) and the Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation (BMC), at the cave-in site on the Western Express Highway.

In its response, the MMMOCL said that due to a cave-in in the area (under BMC jurisdiction), changes had been made at Magathane Metro Station to ensure commuters’ safety. The changes include temporarily closing the exit on the northern side of Magathane station and additional staff members being deployed to guide passengers.

During inspection, it was observed that the stormwater drain chamber near Entry Exit 2 of Magathane station was in close proximity to the foundation of the stairs and escalator. Deep excavation carried out by a builder adjacent to the drain chamber led to a cave-in and the surrounding soil, in turn, damaged the chamber wall. This led to stormwater flowing into the builder’s excavation area, posing a potential risk of further collapse of the drain chamber and foundation of the stairs and escalator.

BMC said permission for the private building coming up on the land was granted by the building proposal department. “We are proposing action against the architect and consultant for not properly assessing the soil strata and bringing site to a safe stage,” said a ward-level officer.
