SECUNDERABAD: The continuous spells of heavy rain in Hyderabad and Secunderabad have put in focus many structures that are old and dilapidated, and which pose a threat to life and property.

According to an assessment done by engineering officials of Secunderabad Cantonment Board (SCB) in 2022, there were about 20 structures built in pre-Independence, which were on the verge of collapse.

Most of them were G+1 structures and located in Lal Bazar, Bolarum and Tadbund areas of the Cantonment. They occupied anywhere between 50 sq yards and 120 sq yards space.

To avoid threat to life, engineering wing officials served notices to the owners of these structures to demolish them on their own or let the SCB take a call. Some of these buildings had people staying in them.

“Nearly half a dozen property owners agreed to our pleas and demolished them. However, there are still some structures not demolished. We have tracked these properties and alerted the owners, keeping in view fresh predictions for rains in the next few days,” a senior SCB official told TOI.

Officials have cautioned occupants of buildings adjacent to or in the vicinity of these dilapidated buildings.
