NOIDA: A Delhi-based man was arrested on Tuesday for allegedly cheating a Noida resident of more than Rs 2.3 crore on the pretext of a property deal, police officials said. The accused was arrested from Delhi airport when he returned from a foreign trip.

Police had issued a look-out circular for the suspect.

According to the police, the accused was identified as 52-year-old Shravan Kumar Chaudhary, a resident of Madhu Vihar in Delhi and the director of Gujara Construction Pvt Ltd. He allegedly created a fraudulent contract to sell a property to the complainant for Rs 9 crore, which actually belongs to the Noida Authority.

“On July 31 this year, Sushil Kumar, a resident of Sector 19, submitted a complaint at the Phase 1 police station alleging that the suspect had taken Rs 2.33 crore from him following a property sale agreement, which turned out to be fraudulent,” said Shakti Avasthy, additional deputy commissioner of police, Noida.

“The contract was signed for a property located in Harola village under Sector 5. The suspect told the complainant that a seven-storey commercial complex is under his construction company’s name and he is willing to sell half of it for Rs 9.50 crores,” Avasthy added.

The contract between the two sides was signed on November 25, 2022, he said, adding that the complainant paid the sum in two instalments.

“When the complainant asked the suspect to get registration papers of the property, Chaudhary avoided him. Kumar later found that the property in question belongs to Noida Authority,” said Avasthy.

The complainant told police that he confronted Chaudhary and asked him to return the money. Chaudhary then allegedly threatened to kill the complainant, said officials.

On the basis of the complaint, an FIR under sections 420 (Cheating and dishonestly inducing delivery of property), 506 (criminal intimidation) of the IPC was registered.

The police were on the lookout for Chaudhary, but he had gone to London, he added. “The suspect is in police custody,” he said.
