Delhi civic body identifies 10 lakh property tax default cases in four years, ET RealEstate

NEW DELHI: Municipal Corporation of Delhi (MCD) has reviewed the summary of taxpayers for the last four years and identified around 10 lakh cases where people have not paid taxes for the last one or two years.

The civic body has started sending messages to such tax defaulters. “They are being given time to submit their replies. If they fail to reply, then we will serve notices to such taxpayers,” said an official.

The move is among many steps taken by the civic body recently to check defaulters and increase the tax net.

“Despite coming out with so many amnesty schemes in the past and giving major rebates, there are people who are not paying their taxes or making incomplete payments. Such a practice is unfair as honest taxpayers have been paying their taxes regularly. We are checking the records of the commercial as well as residential properties,” said the official.

While in 2022-23, the total number of taxpayers was over 13 lakh, this year (till June 30), 9 lakh people have submitted their advance taxes.

The civic body has also served notices to the long-term defaulters who have not paid taxes for years. It has attached 150 properties, including farmhouses, banquets, commercial establishments, guesthouses, etc., in this financial year so far for non-payment of property tax amounting to Rs 20 crore.

MCD has, meanwhile, also started geotagging all non-residential properties. “Our staff members are inspecting the units to gather all details in targeted areas. So far, about 4,000 units have been geo-tagged. The purpose is to cover all properties liable to pay taxes,” said the official.

“MCD was carrying out this project under sections of the DMC Act on powers of mandatory inspection and obligations,” said an official.
