KOLKATA: Chief minister Mamata Banerjee on Monday has told real estate developers’ body Credai to take the advantage of new land policy and invest more in the state. She said that the state government has changed the focus of its land policy from leasehold to free-hold one.

“Along with the free-hold policy, we are implementing faster clearances,” she added. According to her, if Credai is interested they can take take land from the land bank. “We have land bank. Credai can take land for logistics cluster, manufacturing cluster as well,” she said.

The CM also advised Credai to develop house for weaker section as well. “I would also urge Credai to black list those promoters who are not delivering flat after taking advance,” she added.

The Credai West Bengal president, Sushil Mohta, said that it would work hand in hand with state government for a vibrant Bengal. “In last 10 years, housing demand has increased three times,” he added. On Monday, the CM also unveiled a report prepared by Credai and Liases Foras.

As per the report in India, 31% of the population lives in cities as of 2011, and this figure is predicted to rise to 39% by the end of 2036. It also says that urbanisation in Bengal would be more rapid. In 2011, 32% of the population lived in cities across the state, and this is predicted to rise to 42% by 2036.

From 2011 to 2036, there will be an increase of 15 million people in urban areas. As per the report, the additional housing requirement by 2036 due to the population growth is 3.5 million in Bengal and 64 million in India.

“In 2018, the housing shortage in the state was 2 million, and 29 million houses in India. Therefore, the total estimated housing demand by 2036 in India and Bengal is 93 million and 5.55 million houses, respectively,” adds the report.
