CHANDIGARH: The municipal corporation (MC) has given a chance to a dozen institutions of the central government and Punjab and Haryana to reconcile their property tax dues of Rs 60 crore by September 30.

Municipal commissioner Anindita Mitra on Friday called representatives of the defaulter institutions to discuss property tax issues, mainly outstanding amount.

However, representatives of only around half a dozen institutes turned up.

Sources said Panjab University (PU) tops the defaulter list with around 25 crore. None of its officials attended the meeting. “PGI, Chandigarh administration, director general security of the Punjab government and Haryana Roadways are some of the other major tax defaulters,” sources added.

In the case of PU, following its request, a fresh survey had been conducted and documents checked. “PU has been repeatedly told to pay the tax. The civic body has told the administration that PU is an autonomous body and falls under the tax ambit. If any kind of relaxation is given to PU, many other educational institutions too could ask for the same benefit, leading to a major financial loss to the MC,” sources said.
