CHANDIGARH: In the wake of discussions over the Chandigarh Master Plan and its implications on urban development and heritage preservation, chief architect Ketan Setia on Sunday said, “Density remains a pivotal issue in phases two and three of our deliberations.”

On the sidelines of “First Friday Forum” annual oration-cum-award function held in collaboration with Chandigarh College of Architecture, Setia said, “Heritage preservation is already integral to our policy framework and master plan. While aspirational technologies are being explored, ecological equilibrium remains paramount, and the policy is steadfast in its pursuit of this balance.”

Surinder Bahga, a city-based architect, pointed out lack of a proper documentation process to identify heritage buildings, uncertainties over preservation methods and responsible parties, and the need for a clear administrative approach.

He said Urban Art Commission, Delhi, which advises the Centre on matters concerning the preservation, development, and aesthetics of designs, holds the key to preserving the heritage.
