LUDHIANA: The much-awaited construction and demolition waste plant is soon going to become a reality as the civic officials have finally issued the work orders for commencement of its construction.
The tender for the project, which had been hanging fire for three years, has been allocated at Rs 7.45 crore. The officials have been directed to fulfill the necessary requirements of attaining NOCs from other departments in advance so that the plant can be made functional immediately.
As per sources, it is likely that a VIP inauguration of the work will be held in the coming days.
To eradicate construction and demolition waste, which can be seeing lying on every nook and corner of the city, the civic body had planned to set up a waste disposal plant in Dhandhari under the smart city mission around three years back. However, the officials could not execute it due to one reason or the other.
The site selected for plant was initially a dumpsite and the previous cost was not enough to construct underground pillars and building of the plant, therefore, the project was later shifted under Swachh Bharat Mission.
MC commissioner Sandeep Rishi said, “The construction of the plant will take 3-4 months. We will need Punjab Pollution Control Board (PPCB) consent and other required documents to run operations then therefore, the officials have been directed to get pending approvals now.”
He said a toll-free number will be introduced for people to call the firm concerned on to request lifting of the C&D waste. He added that vehicles arranged for lifting of the waste will also be arranged.
The officials require 2.5 to 3 acres of land for the construction of this plant. Moreover, in compliance with NGT guidelines and the PPCB, the plant should be established away from residential areas.
