BENGALURU: Bruhat Bengaluru Mahanagara Palike (BBMP) officials on Monday carried out a stormwater drain (SWD) encroachment clearance drive at Ferns City apartment in Doddanekkundi ward, Mahadevapura east zone, amid vociferous protests by residents who said they weren’t informed in advance and that they weren’t guilty of any encroachment.

While Ferns City residents managed to obtain a stay order from the high court against the demolition drive by afternoon, Palike officials said they had by then completed razing what they had identified as encroachments.

Rajavendra BN, assistant executive engineer, SWD, confirmed that they had completed their day’s work.

BBMP said it pulled down the Ferns City clubhouse building, swimming pool, STP building and a compound wall sitting on 200 metres of stormwater drain. Next to Ferns City, BBMP workers and machines cleared an empty plot and razed a hotel that stood on another 20 metres of the drain. Another hotel had been marked for demolition but the staff told the officials that they will soon raze the structure.

Residents alleged that they were targeted, while several big residential complexes around them weren’t touched.

The residents said during last year’s monsoon, when Outer Ring Road was flooded, BBMP served a notice on them over rajakaluve (SWD) encroachment. However, survey number 24/7 on which Ferns City stands was missing from the survey order up for hearing. “We had been to the tahsildar’s office thrice since the notice. As our survey number was not mentioned in the order, we believed our apartment was violation-free,” a committee member told TOI.

Advocate Amritha Jaya Prakash, who represents Ferns City, said a resident received an unofficial call from BBMP on Saturday evening. The caller said the demolition work will start on Monday. “Neither was there any official notice, nor any call from the Palike. The call was made on Saturday because they knew courts would be shut on Sunday. My clients were unaware of the demolition. They were not heard. The BBMP order that hadn’t specified the survey number should have been modified,” the advocate said.
