NOIDA: As the air in Noida turned ‘very poor’ on Sunday, residents of sectors 122 and 93 complained of increasing dust pollution, mainly due to construction and demolition waste dumping.

Though the Commission for Air Quality Management (CAQM) implemented stage 2 of the Graded Response Action Plan (GRAP) in Delhi-NCR and adjoining areas on Saturday, the same is not visible on the ground. “Due to construction activity, C&D waste is left untended in many places.

This is leading to dust pollution in the sector and posing a health hazard for residents. Many have complained about breathing problems,” said Umesh Sharma, the RWA president of Sector 122. Residents of Sector 93 also complained of broken footpaths and mud and garbage on the central verge of the main road.

“Will pollution be reduced just by banning generators in societies? What about the footpaths which have been lying broken for over a month, or the central verge of the main road, which is full of mud, leading to all-round dust pollution?” asked a resident of the sector, Umashankar Sharma.

In the meantime, the UPPCB’s regional office and Noida Authority have activated their anti-pollution drives. Officials have directed mechanical or vacuum sweeping of roads and sprinkling water every day. They are also enforcing dust control measures at construction and demolition sites, checking air pollution at hotspots, and issuing fines.

“Fines are being levied by teams on the ground wherever pollution norms are found to be flouted. We have already issued an advisory on covering C&D waste as well as tending to dust pollution by sprinkling water, etc.,”
