MUMBAI: Fifteen slums, one in each of the 15 BMC administrative wards in Mumbai suburbs, will be spruced up over the next one year. Mumbai suburban guardian minister Mangalprabhat Lodha said Rs 5 crore has been set aside from the District Planning Committee (DPC) budget for each of the 15 slums.

“We shall create cement tunnels and place all the underground utilities inside them and then lay a cement concrete or pave block road over it. This will not only put all utilities in one place but help widen the road and improve the slums which otherwise have open gutters, water pipelines running over them,” he said.

On Wednesday, a Rs 977 crore budget for Mumbai suburbs was approved at the DPC meeting at Chetna college. The meeting was attended by a majority of MLAs from the suburbs.

Lodha said Rs 488 crore has been budgeted for Dalit areas for improving civic infrastructure, Rs 115 crore for building protection walls under the slum relocation and rehabilitation project, Rs 5 crore for skill development and Rs 19 crore for women and child welfare schemes. Lodha said the government will provide Rs 5 lakh worth of gym equipment to 1,500 schools in the suburbs which include civic, government and aided schools.

“They can put the equipment in a room or as an open gymnasium,” he said. BJP MLA from Andheri west Ameet Satam said all nullahs in the suburbs prone to dumping of trash should be covered with fabricated sheets with openings at regular intervals for desilting. He also asked for screen systems – installed at Irla pumping station which stops trash from entering the sea – to be executed at 25 different locations in the city. Satam also demanded that all open spaces in the city be maintained by the BMC with no private intervention.
