PUNE: The state government has completed 97% mapping of rural residential land parcels using drones, state settlement commissioner officials told TOI.

The technology is being used to fix boundaries of villages, government and semi-government properties, and issue property cards.

Of the total 31,984 villages in the state, the drone survey has been completed in 31,069 villages, according to the data provided by settlement commissioner’s office.

The Central government has provided 25 drones to the state for this purpose. Drone-based mapping will help in clearing titles and disputes and in issuing property cards after verification, said officials.

Of the areas mapped with drones, physical inquiries with the landholder have been completed in 17,330 villages, an official said.

“Mapping was earlier carried out manually. However, the drone technology has now changed the way the massive exercise was undertaken and helped speed up the process,” the official added.

The project was kicked off at Sonori village in Purandar tehsil in Pune district in 2018 as a pilot under the Svamitva scheme to provide integrated property validation for rural areas.

While the two-year Covid period delayed the project, it gathered momentum in the last two years. “Now, only 915 villages are yet to be mapped with drones, which will be done soon,” said an official involved in the exercise.

The officials added that 12.496 maps and 8,846 property cards have been generated via the exercise. “Around 40% maps and 28% property cards have been generated,” the official said.

“Through this scheme, every rural household will have a record of rights. This is being achieved using drones and continuously operating reference station technology for capturing images of properties,” said a central official.
