NASHIK: Industrialists have claimed that around 40% of the streetlights in the Ambad industrial area of the Maharashtra Industrial Development Corporation (MIDC) are defunct.

The Ambad industrial estate — which is located within the jurisdiction of the Nashik Municipal Corporation (NMC) and houses over 2,000 small, medium and large industrial units — has over 1,500 streetlights. And the maintenance is he NMC’s responsibility. The MIDC only supplies water to the industries.

The NMC had recently installed LED streetlights, but most of them are not functioning now. The Ambad Industries & Manufacturers’ Association (AIMA) has asked the civic body to look into the issues.

Nikhil Panchal, the president of AIMA, said most of the streetlights in the Ambad industrial estate are defunct as they are not being maintained properly.

“Most of the time, many lights on the roads do not work and cause inconvenience to people. There could be accidents on the dark roads. Also, there could be thieves making use of the dark to target their victims. Therefore, we want the civic body to look into the issue and ensure that all lights are functional,” Panchal said.

NMC commissioner Chandrkant Pulkundwar told TOI that a survey of streetlights in Ambad industrial estate was conducted and all the lights in industrial areas that are defunct will be functional within a week.

An NMC official, who was part of the survey, admitted that some of the streetlights in the industrial areas were defunct. “The agency, which installed the LED streetlights and is accountable for the repair and maintenance, has been told to do look into this matter and fix the issue in three-four days,” the official said.
